1.Palindromes (2004) 2.Happiness (1998) 3.Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995) I have decided that Palindromes is my favourite Todd Solondz film, I mean, Happiness is a classic and it was a really tough decision, but I have now watched Palindromes more than 5 times and as much as those same scenes cause my skin to crawl I am finding it more and more delightful. Also, don’t think for a second I have forgotten Welcome to the Dollhouse. I adored that film and I first saw it when I was quite young and have re-watched it several times, however I still think that it comes a very close third. Heather Matarazzo’s performance was fantastic and again it was so hard to find its rightful place in my top 3. I really really enjoyed the fact that Palindromes focused so heavily on one little confused and abused girl and the switching of the actresses really added a flavour I haven’t tasted in many films at all. The sympathetic view of the born again pedophile really tugged the heart strings where as I felt Happiness made the pill a little too hard to swallow when involving the son. Happiness had the all-star cast, all our favourite misfits and oddballs, and usually I would prefer a film that had insights into so many lives but I really think Palindromes wins by a hair. A tiny fetus hair.
